Kewanee FFA Students Attend Community “Ag Day” with Kiwanis and Rotary

Kewanee High School FFA students recently attended a joint “Ag Day” meeting hosted by the Kewanee Kiwanis Club and Rotary Club, bringing together students and community members to recognize the importance of agriculture in the region.
During the event, students listened to a presentation from guest speaker Brandon Hall, a location operations manager with West Central FS and self-proclaimed @ILSOILNERD.
Hall provided an overview of soil science, focusing on how soils are formed, the impact of glacial movement across Illinois, and the factors that influence soil composition and health.
Hall also shared his personal journey into agronomy, explaining how his experiences at Black Hawk College and the University of Wisconsin–Platteville led him to become a soil expert.
Throughout the presentation, students learned key facts about soil, including the slow rate at which soil forms, the effects of wind and water erosion, and the causes of soil degradation. Hall also outlined the four key principles of soil health: minimizing soil disturbance, maximizing soil cover, maximizing biodiversity, and maintaining continuous living roots.
He emphasized the importance of understanding and applying these principles to support long-term soil sustainability, reinforcing his message that “Soil is the new cool.”
Kewanee FFA students represented the district well, demonstrating attentiveness and interest throughout the program while engaging with community partners in attendance. Opportunities like Ag Day help connect students to real-world applications of agricultural science and strengthen community partnerships.
Kewanee CUSD #229 extends its appreciation to the Kewanee Kiwanis Club and Rotary Club for hosting this event and to Brandon Hall for sharing his knowledge and expertise.

Kewanee High School Wins Sectional Championship with Between the Lines,
Advances to IHSA State Finals

2026 Kewanee High School Group Interpretation team wins Sectional

Kewanee High School proudly announces that its Group Interpretation team has earned a Sectional Championship title with its performance of Between the Lines, advancing to the Illinois
High School Association (IHSA) State Finals.
Additionally, every cast member received special recognition as all-sectional cast members.
Kewanee Community Unit School District 229 proudly celebrate these students on their accomplishments: Aloria Button, Dalton Swearingen, Marcos Torres, Karina Wims, Abigail Wyant, Azucena Paredes, Alex Barron, Camila Herrera
Soto, Da’Mya Brown, Caleb Wyant, and Annie Campbell. The team is supported by student director Kailey Shaw.

IHSA Group Interpretation is a unique and highly competitive performing arts event in which students collaboratively bring literature to life through a coordinated ensemble performance.
Unlike traditional theater, the focus is not on elaborate sets or costumes, but on storytelling through voice, movement, and ensemble dynamics.

At the sectional and state levels, all competing schools are provided with the same standardized set pieces, commonly referred to as “the boxes,” including platforms, cubes, ramps, and stairs.
Students must use these shared materials creatively to develop setting, transitions, and visual storytelling, placing the emphasis on interpretation, innovation, and teamwork.

Kewanee High School’s performance of Between the Lines distinguished itself through exceptional ensemble work, clear storytelling, and purposeful physical interpretation of the
storyline. The team’s ability to transform a common set of materials into a compelling and emotionally engaging performance reflects both artistic vision and disciplined preparation.

“This accomplishment speaks to the incredible talent and dedication of our students and director, Heather Olalde,” said Superintendent Rebecca Baney. “We are extremely proud of the team’s hard
work and dedication to this craft. Students must bring their best to interpret and portray multiple characters, the physical setting, and the mood of the story. Their work is art in its highest form.”

With this sectional championship, Kewanee High School advances to the IHSA State Finals, which will be held March 26–28, 2026, at Reavis High School in Burbank, Illinois.

The Kewanee community celebrates this outstanding achievement and looks forward to supporting the Boilermakers as they compete on the state stage.
